From Stock to Stunning — In Under 1 Hour

Here's how it's done, step by step. The vehicle shown is a 2015 Ford Explorer — the same process applies to all 2011-2019 models with the factory 4.2-inch screen.

Step 1: Remove the dash trim panel

Start by gently prying off the silver trim surrounding the factory screen and climate controls. Use a plastic trim tool to avoid scratches. The trim is held by clips — no screws here — so work your way around steadily.

Step 2: Unscrew the factory display module

With the trim off, you'll see four screws holding the factory screen module in place. Remove them and set them aside — you won't need the old module anymore.

Step 3: Disconnect the factory harness

Unplug the main wiring harness and any additional connectors from the back of the old unit. Take your time here — these connectors have release tabs you need to press, not pull.

Step 4: Transfer the air vents to the new unit

The factory AC vents on the original module need to be moved to the new Topdisplay unit. They snap right into place on the back of the new screen — same mounting points, same fitment.

Step 5: Connect the new wiring harness

Plug the Topdisplay harness into the new screen, then connect the other end to your Explorer's factory connectors. Every plug is keyed differently — if it doesn't click in, it's the wrong port. This is truly plug-and-play.

Step 6: Power-on test before final mounting

THIS STEP MATTERS. Before you bolt everything down, turn on the ignition and confirm the screen powers up, touch works, sound comes through, steering wheel controls respond, and the backup camera triggers. Test CarPlay, radio, Bluetooth, and climate controls. Only proceed once everything checks out.

Step 7: Mount and secure the new unit

Slide the new screen into the dash opening, align it with the mounting brackets, and secure with the included screws. Don't overtighten — the last thing you want is a cracked bezel.

Step 8: Reinstall the dash trim

Snap the silver trim panel back into place around the new screen. It should click in smoothly — if it doesn't, check that no cables are pinched behind it.

Step 9: Final power-up and configuration

Turn the ignition back on and watch your Explorer come alive. The screen boots in seconds. Run through the initial settings (language, time zone, CAN bus protocol if prompted), then pair your phone. You're done.
